Zhangyuan was founded in 1882. It is located in the intersection of West Nanjing Road, Maoming North Road and Tai Xing Road. It is Shanghai’s most famous garden in late Qing dynasty.

The reconstruction is rooted in the public space culture as in early history of Zhangyuan and in the Shanghai neighborhood culture as in late history of Zhangyuan. It is at the same time combined with the needs in the new era, seeking a perfect balance to identify the modern Zhangyuan which relates back to Zhang’s Garden in 1882.
